How to get to Cappadocia

First, it is important to know that Cappadocia is a region of Turkey, not a city or town. So, where is Cappadocia? It is about 3 hours drive southeast of the Turkish capital Ankara, which is a large area in central Turkey. To travel to Cappadocia, you need to fly to one of these two airports-Kayseri (ASR) or Nevsehir (NAV).

There are daily flights from Istanbul to Kayseri and Nevsehir. The flight time is just over an hour. No matter which airport you choose, both are 30-40 minutes drive from Göreme (Cappadocia), which does not have much impact on your choice.

Some common sense

The currency is Turkish Lira or LA, and the exchange rate is about 1 US dollar: 5-6 Turkish Lira. In Goreme, there are not many official currency exchange offices, but many restaurants and hotels accept credit card payments.

There is no place in town to buy a local Turkish SIM card. Instead, download local maps via wifi in your hotel for offline use.

If you spend a few days in the area, the Museum Pass Cappadocia card is a good choice.

Passes have been accepted at many tourist attractions, including Goreme Open Air Museum and Dark Church, Ilala Valley, Derinkuyu Underground City and Zelvi Archaeological Site.

If you want to travel to other places in Turkey, including Istanbul, Ephesus, Pamukkale or Fethiye, you may need to purchase a Turkish Museum Pass.

Best time to visit Cappadocia:

The best time to visit Cappadocia is from March to June or September to November, when the crowds are scarce and the weather is mild.

Cappadocia’s wearing method

In just a few hours, the temperature may fluctuate greatly. Regarding the dress code of Cappadocia, most people in Turkey are Muslims, but Cappadocia is not very conservative. For the sake of respect, I suggest that you dress conservatively.

Cappadocia Accommodation

The main tourist cities of Cappadocia are Urgup, Goreme, Ilala Valley, Selim, Guzerrit, Uchisar, Avanos and Zelvi. Most hotels are located in Goreme, Urgup and Usisar.

But I suggest you stay in Goreme because the town has many tourist companies, grocery stores, restaurants and hotels. And here is the closest to the hot air balloon take-off point.

One of the most unique things about Cappadocia is to stay in a cave hotel, the room is carved on the hillside or stone pillar. There are many options to choose from. Staying here for 3 nights is the best choice. If you are traveling from June to August, then you need to book in advance.

Hundreds of hot air balloons take off every morning

Cappadocia may be the only place in the world where hundreds of balloons fly almost every morning, providing memorable life experiences for more than 2,000 people every day.

You need to book in advance

Hot air balloons are the most popular thing that Cappadocia does, so you must book as early as possible because the balloons fill up a few months in advance.

If you book a hot air balloon tour on the day of arrival, then you will definitely have no place. Do n’t think that there are about 100 balloons flying every morning, which means you can guarantee a place to fly. One of the biggest suggestions to travel to Cappadocia is to stay for three days to maximize the chance of flying in a hot air balloon.

According to the quotations given by several hot air balloon travel companies, the average cost of a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia is 130-180 euros (145-200 dollars) per person based on how many people are in the basket.

You may fall to the ground when the balloons land

If you have never been in a hot air balloon before, you will be surprised to find that this is a very special aircraft, especially when the basket bounces or tilts in strong winds. The important thing is not where you want to go, but where the wind blows. The basket will tilt during landing, please follow the pilot’s instructions to grasp the handrail.

Because the hot air balloon travels with the wind, the flight trajectory almost entirely depends on the wind speed and direction. The same flight for an hour, the flight distance may be different, so the landing will occur in any area, including parks, open fields, campuses or roads. this is normal phenomenon.

Cappadocia hot air balloon can reach 3,000 feet above ground

If you are not afraid of flying at high altitude, you need to know that the balloon can fly 3,000 feet above the ground. During my hot air balloon flight in Cappadocia, the hot air balloon I took reached 1,000 meters! This altitude is also the usual flying altitude.

Flights are occasionally cancelled

You may not believe that the flight will indeed be cancelled. The hot air balloon in Cappadocia operates all year round (approximately 250 days of the year), but if the weather is bad, the flight will indeed be cancelled. It is usually the strong wind that causes the flight to be cancelled.

In fact, due to strong winds, I saw the cancellation of the flight the next day in Cappadocia. I am glad that I carried out a hot air balloon flight yesterday.

Many people paid cash in the hot air balloon company’s office, and at the take-off site, watching the balloon filled with hot air. But received the news of flight cancellation!

What happens if your hot air balloon tour in Cappadocia is cancelled (weather reasons)? Every hot air balloon company in Cappadocia will promise you a full refund.

The first thing you have to do is try to reschedule the time with the same company you booked. However, during the peak season (June-August) the next day’s flight booking is full, it is difficult to have the opportunity to take a hot air balloon. Many times I think that riding a hot air balloon in Cappadocia is totally luck!

Or, ask about its luxury flights (more expensive), sunset flights, and flights after sunrise. If you do not get a reply, then you are out of luck.
